Mixed Media Sampling Evaluation - Week Three

Week three in MM, I had no chance to book sessions in laser cutting as I was unaware of booking time. By the time I had realised when and how to book it, there was no space left for a session. So I was left the option to go around the campus taking images of buildings and areas of the university that normally wouldn't be captured through imagery. This idea was brought by peer review. My review on my work so far showed that I had not planned my work out properly and not linked it therefore it was not strong enough.

Because I was unfortunate to have another session in laser cutting, I started making more sample from the little pieces of wood that I left with, from the trial and error piece. From this I found myself linking my primary research and also artist’s works. I feel that I also achieved my goal in recycling my work to make several samples like my artists.

From capturing the images, I began planning and drawing out how I would recreate the space using my references and samples ideas.

Mixed Media Sampling Evaluation - Artists

For artist research and references, I tried looking for people who work with found objects, recycle their work, work with different shapes and sizes, and also artists that work with architecture. I also looked for artist that are from different areas of artists such as; fashion design, interior designers etc.

Andy Goldworthy - Environmentalist, Expressionist, Structural.

I chose Andy as a reference because his techniques of using found objects and working with them just amazes me. and the fact that you don't really have to buy expensive materials to create art empowers his work

Izzy Miyake - Fashion Designer, Interior Designer, Origami Specialist.

From the paper sculptural session in week one, Izzy was an instant artist that I thought of as i had worked with his work before. this artist uses origami to create his garments. One thing I love about his work is that all his work is made from recycled objects.

Cui Fei - Works with found objects, Expressionist.

Cui Fei was chosen simple because of the shapes and sizes used in her work. I feel that I could possibly carry this out onto my samples.

Zaha Hadid - Architectural Designer, Interior Designer.

Zaha Hadid is another artist that I have worked with before. I chose her because of my them being based on architecture. her work and designs are very complex yet to mesmerizing.

Cara Barer - Book Artists, Specialist in Recycling

Cara Barer was an inspiration while working with the verbs list in week one. the fact that she uses the same technique in all her work, but yet find a way to make them look all different is a technique I am willing to carry out.

Mixed Media Sampling Evaluation - Week Two

Week two was a really difficult for me as I was absent for the laser into, which caused my lack of knowledge within laser cutting session. From week one I was aware of the fact that I had to have some designs ready for laser cutting in order to get a sense how it works, and what effects can be created from the laser. This was my chosen design for the trial and error session, simple. The design was developed from looking at this particular piece of interpretation that I did of an artwork that I saw at the museum. It was also inspired by the developed motifs. by looking at the motifs as a whole picture, the main shapes that were brought forward were circles.

Laser cutting session, Mine in the process.

Outcome

The results of laser cutting did not really turn out the way I wanted it to. The laser had cut through the wood and created little pieces. This was because of the colour I commanded from the computer; red. red is the technique that cuts out the selected lines. So I was left with tiny little wood pieces from my sample. On the second drawing session, my tutor recommended that instead of throwing the pieces away, I could recreate numerous samples. Here they are.

Mixed Media Sampling Evaluation - Week One

First week of Mixed Media, I focused my concept on my developed motifs from print. my theme in this rotation was architectural concepts of educational settings.for [primary research I went into Manchester City Centre and captured images I thought would relate to my theme in print, which I could then develop on that in my next rotation in MM.

First session in MM, we were given the task of interpreting our meaning of certain verbs on a list. These were my creations.

From the beginning of researching which path I would like to work in MM, I came to my decision by reflecting on my experience on drawing days in the print rotation, which i enjoyed. Therefore, from the drawing session I developed on motifs, I based my concept and theme on this particular set of motifs.
